Krewe & Parade Overview
Krewe & Parade Overview

The Krewe of Okeanos was formed in 1949 by a group of men with businesses in the Upper 9th Ward.

Over the years we have had several routes:
1950 to 1978 - St. Claude Ave. Route
      1979 to 1992 - Mid-City Route
      1993 to 2005 - Claiborne Uptown Route
      2006 to 2008 - Napoleon Uptown Route
      2009 to 2020 - Magazine Uptown Route
                   2022 - Napoleon Uptown Route
2023 to Today - Magazine Uptown Route

Today, the Krewe follows the Magazine Uptown route on the last Sunday before Mardi Gras.  We are the first of four parades that day, starting around 11 am and finishing around 3:30 pm at our host hotel.

Registration Types
Registration Types

The Krewe has two registration types:

  • Ride Event – this is the standard event for riding in the parade. Annual dues include a rider position on a float; a tunic, mask, gloves and hat for the Ride; admittance for the member to the Coronation Ball; and select specials / discounts throughout the parade year.
  • Royal Court Participant – this is for those who will help us support our traditions by participating in the annual Coronation Ball. The court fees cover the participant’s admittance to the Ball and a ride in a parade (current year for most participants and the following year for the Queen and Maids). Current members planning to escort a Maid or Junior Maid at the Ball should sign up as a Duke / Jr. Duke instead of a Member.

Please note, each registration type has age and/or gender requirements, so use the drop-down box on the Registration page to find the type that best fit for you.

Refunds and Credits
Refunds and Credits

Revised 1/1/22

Unless indicated by specific conditions below, the Krewe does not offer any refunds nor credits for any event that occurs as scheduled.  This is especially true for any event that may occur during inclement weather.  If the City says it is safe to parade, then we will parade – no exceptions.

The Krewe does recognize there are circumstances beyond everyone’s control that may cause an entire event to be cancelled (i.e. inclement weather, power failure, pandemic, etc.).  When that occurs, the Board will compile all unavoidable costs (application fees, non-refundable deposits, prop rental, float painting, etc.) for the event, then determine each member's prorated share of those costs based on membership type.  This cost share will be applied against each member's collected dues/fees and any balance remaining will be credited back to the member’s account to be applied against future membership dues or event fees.

The Board has determined that sudden illness right before the parade, while regrettable, cannot be refunded as costs have been associated with the ride and cannot be resold to a new rider on short notice.  In those cases, the member is asked to work with their Float Lieutenant, to find a replacement rider.

Money spent on items from the Storefront will not be refunded as those items belong to the member and can either be picked up from the Den at a specified date or held over at the Den until next year’s ride.

The Krewe does recognize there are occasions and circumstances beyond a member’s control that warrant consideration of a refund/credit.  When that occurs, members are asked to send an email to Treasurer@KreweofOkeanos.org explaining the situation and indicating if they would like a refund or a credit.  The Board will review the request and reply as appropriate.

Bead and Throw Restrictions
Bead and Throw Restrictions

For the most part, Riders may throw anything that is readily available from the local “bead” shops (regardless if new or recycled), and anything purchased from our Storefront.  The exceptions include:

  1. Only Krewe of Okeanos branded / logo’ed items. You may not throw items with the logo, name or advertisement of another Mardi Gras Krewe, Business or Organization

  2. Nothing that could cause harm to the parade goers – this includes full bags of beads, hard spears, wire stem flowers and similar hard or pointy objects

  3. Nothing that can be redeemed for discounts, prizes or any other form of monetary value

  4. No trash, especially cardboard boxes and empty plastic packing bags – bead bags are allowed as they are considered a “throw”

Please refer to the City of New Orleans Mardi Gras Ordinance for additional details.

Cost of Throws
Cost of Throws

How much you spend on throws is totally up to you.  For your convenience, the Krewe offers four (4) pre-packaged Rider Packs through the Storefront that range in price from $500 to $1,000.  The number of beads in these Rider Packs are the same, it is the additional items (like cups, doubloons and plush) that comprise the difference.  We also offer many items a la carte if you prefer to throw specific type of bead or item.

In general, first time and younger riders have a tendency to throw very quickly at the start of the parade because of the high excitement level.  So plan your purchases accordingly.  Your Float Lieutenant will be able to answer any specific questions you may have.

Coronation Ball
Coronation Ball

The Coronation Ball is held several weeks before the ride.  During the Ball, the Parade’s King is introduced and his Queen is determined by kismet from the Court’s Maids.  Members who have paid for the Ride Event are encouraged to attend, and the admittance fee is included in the Ride Event fee.  Members and Court Participants are welcome to invite their family and friends to join them for this festive and exciting night.

Details, fees and registration can be found at the Ball Event on the calendar.
